A Country Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving this year was so much fun! Jacob, Sophie, Jacob's sister Melissa, and I got to spend the holiday at my grandmother's house in Elba, Idaho. No bad weather, family, great food, football, and a busy Sophie all made the day special. We headed to Idaho about 8:15 Thursday morning. We got there just about 11. Food was already cooking away. We provided olives, rolls, rice kirspy treats, and pumpkin cookies. Other items were two turkeys, mashed taters and gravy, sweet taters, veggies, green stuff jello heaven, stuffing, apple pie, pumpkin pie and other treats. DELICIOUS! Post meal Sophie and football (Go Broncos!) entertained. A few of us also played the game Whoonu. We got to spend time with grandma, my parents and brother, my Aunt Marnae and much of her family (Doug, Sarah, Logan, Skyler), and Uncle Thane. We missed the rest of the family, especially my Grandpa who passed away last December.
Sophie loves her Aunt Marnae. And Cousin Logan is always good for a laugh. Cousin Sarah spent a lot of time reading books to Sophie. Very nice of her. Jacob and his sister enjoyed some reading also. 4 generations of Ottley women.

Sophie kept trying to find her great grandma. I love this picture so much.Although, it was no surprise that her favorite friend was grandma. They played on the slide. Sophie even figured out how to go up the 3 steps, sit down and slide all by herself. They also went on a 4-wheeler ride together.Another popular play place was the fridge, which was covered with letter magnets. Good times! Sophie can identify at least half of the alphabet when she sees the letters. I think that is pretty good for being less than 2 years old. Most everyone but us left Thursday night. But on Friday Uncle Thane took Sophie on a horseback ride on Shadow! Sophie loves horses even more now. Melissa got in on the horse action with a ride on Cimmaron Cash. Sadly, Sophie broke Melissa's glasses Friday morning, so we ended up leaving a little earlier than expected just to make sure we could get them fixed. We did. And all is well as far as I know. All in all we had a great time and are excited to see family at Christmas time too!

Parents Again?

Seriously, do they let just anyone have a kid these days? Apparently so, because we're on number 2. In fact, we had our big ultrasound today to meet baby 2 - to just about no one's surprise - she's a girl! For those of you not in on the secret, I have seven sisters and seven nieces, and my mom also has seven sisters (I also have two nephews and my mom has one brother, and my seventh niece is only a day old - congratulations Katharine and Adelle!). Girls run strong in my family (any cracks about my own masculinity will not be tolerated).

Anyways, we were excited to be able to see the baby, especially to see how big she was. Our doctor is convinced that Wendy is further along than we thought, but the ultrasound proved us right. We were amazed at how far medical imaging has come along recently, the pictures from the ultrasound were really amazing - We were really impressed with the detail, especially around her face. She seemed to be healthy and active, though not as active as Sophie was/is (as if that's possible!). The official due date is April 21, so everyone get your paper chains started now! Here's baby flexing for the camera - check out those biceps!
This is the best face shot we could get - she was a little camera shy today (taking after her father?).

Saying Thanks

I am totally stealing this from Rach's blog.

Go to this website: http://www.letssaythanks.com. Choose a thank you card, submit it, and Xerox will print it and send it to U.S. military personnel stationed oversees. It is FREE! Let's all spend 10 seconds to do this, and invite others to do the same. Imagine how many soldiers will receive Thank You cards!

Melissa's Visit and a Hair Cut

This weekend was a big one at our house. Jacob's sister Melissa came to visit us from Provo! She kindly agreed to babysit while we went to our ward Elder's Quorum party. (The party was fun! We ate yummy food and then played Wii bowling and tennis. On a related note, Jacob has not stopped asking for a Wii since).
Anyway, Mel and I both got hair cuts and the salon I have been going to for a while. This is what mine looked like. It is my same basic cut, so nothing drastic. But I did have some layers put in it and I LOVE it! I always think I want to grow my hair out and then I get it cut and remember that love short hair and it looks good on me.

Front view. Ooh la la, very stylish, no?The back view. It's official, I love the bob.

Fall Leaves and Playground

We finally made it outside to play in the leaves. Sophie had a lot of fun running away from mom. Apparently mom yelling, "Sophie, don't run in the road! Sophie stay here! Sophie come back!" mean very little when there are leaves and toys.
We loved the crunchy leaves. This might be the only picture I got of her looking at me. She was enthralled with everything else. She could not get enough of the leaves being all over her. Our apartment complex has a little playground. Sophie is finally brave enough to swing by herself. Doesn't she look so happy? Her favorite thing to do at the toys is stand at the bottom of the slide. But she does like to go down the slide too.

TGP Farm

We got to go to the Thanksgiving Point Farm with our friends the Heatons. In fact, a lot of Bree's family came too! So we got to spend some time with the Lemke fam. Soph liked the animals, hands-on activities and riding the horse.

We loved the friendly animals. This little guy just wanted to share Sophie's snacks (that I luckily pulled out of the way). We learned about farming. There is a building at the Farm where kids can see what happens to food from growing to harvesting to shipping to eating. Sophie liked this poster of apples. She rode the tractor. Clearly she is a natural based on her heredity. Grandpa Merlin would be proud. Then Priya rode the tractor and Auntie Bree held Soph for a photo op. Next we rode horses! There were 5 horses tethered to a big wheel-like thing that turns. I put Sophie on one, but had to walk around with her to hold her on. She LOVED it! When her turn was over, the fit started. Sadly, I did not get any pictures of Sophie riding the horse because I was holding her on the horse. I will try to track down a picture from Bree's dad. I think he took some of us along with his own grandkids. Thanks for letting us tag along Bree and fam!

I Love Gweeby

Sophie loves gravy (which she calls "gweeby"). In fact, we have taken to putting on gravy on things just so she will eat them (ie vegetables, meats, starches, etc). But things reached a whole new level when she picked her plate up and started licking it just to get the last drops of gravy.
You can even see her little tongue through the plate! Yes, she loves her gravy.

It's Official!!!

Jacob learned yesterday that he officially passed his Qualifying Exam for his PhD program. He took the test Oct. 7 and it took this long to get the results! Good grief! But we are so happy that he passed. Basically, if he quit now, he would leave with a Masters. Of course, he is not stopping, but it is one hurdle that he is over. With the passing of the exam, he gets a raise! Woohoo! Now the focus is on getting his proposal for his PhD approved and the meeting organized. Hopefully that will happen early December. He is putting final edits on his second paper and has already started working on his third. The requirement is 3 to graduate, but he will most likely do at least 4, maybe 5. We are so proud of Jacob and all his hard work. Go honey!!! We love you!

The Dream

On Saturday my dear friend Claudia Creek (my high school French teacher) came down from Twin Falls, ID for our annual trip to the ballet. We got to see The Dream performed by Ballet West at the Capitol Theater. This ballet was a three part experience. The parts didn't really fit together, and two out of the three were amazing.

The show opened with kind of a tribute to the early Salt Lake Valley pioneers. The music was by Aaron Copeland. For the most part, I thought it was weird. So I was glad when it was over.

The second piece was a pas de deux (dance for two) of three movements. The two dancers were incredible! I was mesmerized the whole time. I loved this part.

The third piece was a shortened version of A Mid-Summer Nights Dream. Once again, I was mesmerized and enthralled. It was funny and entertaining. We had the best time.

I love getting to to the the ballet with Creek. We have been doing this for a few years now. I felt like the luckiest girl!

Halloween Festivities!

Halloween is not our favorite holiday. In fact, we really only do anything because dressing Sophie up is pretty fun. Plus our ward does a chili party and that is tasty. Other than that, we don't usually groove on the Halloween. That said, this one was pretty good. We attended our ward party where we dressed up. Sophie was a pumpkin. Jacob was a pie crust. I was the baker. I was making a pumpkin pie. What? It was a theme! :)

Here is our cutie pumpkin girl. She did a pretty good job of keeping her hat on most of the time. Jacob wore a tan shirt and tan pants. This is our Fluckiger Pumpkin Pie. A family shot. This picture gave me flashbacks of last year's ward H party. Sophie looked grumpy in every photo then and now. In any case, the party was fun. We had chili and cornbread and then you could decorate your own sugar cookies. (Jacob does not heart the chili, so he ate before he went). Meanwhile, check out my huge hat! It was much too big for my head, so I enlisted bobby pins to help hold it on. Success! On Halloween we went to the tri-ward trunk or treat. There are three wards that meet in our building. Everyone congregated in the church parking lot, opened their trunks and the kiddies walked around getting candy. I think it was a little weird that kids over the age of 12 came around, but whatever. We took 5 bags of candy and that lasted 30 minutes. So we pretty much were first to leave. Here are Jacob and Sophie walking around before the hoopla started. Please note the green outfit underneath. Jacob dressed her like this on purpose and said that she looked like a pumpkin on a vine! Sophie LOVED her trick or treating bucket. She did not really care about candy so much. But the fact that it went in the bucket made it more appealing. By the end she would say something like "trick or treat", but really we focused on practicing "thank you" even more. So cute!It only took us about 15 minutes to go around. I guess if you only go around once you finish much faster (we had a lot of kids come through 2 and 3 times. Huh!?) So, for the last few minutes Soph hung out in the trunk. She got to have a package of Dots and she loved them. I think she just thought they were fruit snacks. All in all, it was a pretty fun time. Halloween 2009 was a success! Bring on the Holiday Season!
